Opera Gala: Wrocław

ABOUT THE CONCERT

During the opera gala, when the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic will be conducted by Gianluca Marcianò, Jonathan Tetelman will perform as soloist. The American tenor has enjoyed star status in opera for several years now. His success stems from his outstanding albums recorded for Deutsche Grammophon. Two years ago, the artist was awarded the Opus Klassik Discovery of the Year award and specializes in Italian repertoire.

Despite this, the singer's concert with the Wrocław Philharmonic will begin with a French repertoire. It will open with selections from Charles Gounod's works: the opening fragment from the opera Romeo and Juliet and an aria from Faust , whose libretto is based on the first part of Johann Wolfgang Goethe's drama of the same name. Jules Massenet also drew on themes from the Weimar classic, composing his opera Werther , to a libretto based, of course, on The Sorrows of Young Werther – this piece will be performed next.

The recital will also feature works by the brilliant Giuseppe Verdi. However, the musicians will explore some of his lesser-known works: operas dating back to the 1840s, such as Macbeth and Luisa Miller . The Italian portion of the evening will also feature compositions by Umberto Giordano and Pietro Mascagni. The evening will conclude with famous excerpts from Giacomo Puccini's operas, and Tetelman will prove that it was not without reason that he was named by Gramophone magazine as one of the ten greatest performers of the immortal roles of the protagonists in these works. The American will perform, for example, the aria "E lucevan le stelle ," sung by Cavaradossi in Tosca , awaiting execution in Rome's Castel Sant'Angelo. The concert will conclude with the stunning "Nessum Dorma ," Prince Calaf's aria from Puccini's last, unfinished opera, Turandot . Calaf, il principe ignoto (Italian: 'the unknown prince'), ponders the titular character, certain that the cruel girl will not be able to guess his name, which, as a result of the intrigue that has been hatched, will soon result in Turandot becoming his wife.

ABOUT THE CONCERT

Blessed with a ‘golden voice’, Jonathan Tetelman’s meteoric career has taken him to the world’s leading opera houses, while his records have picked up a succession of awards. His partner, Carolina López Moreno, who exploded onto the international scene as Liù from Turandot, “portrays Puccini’s emotional depths and human tragedy with remarkable intensity and authenticity.” Essential Puccini, therefore: The two artists will perform excerpts from La rondine and Madama Butterfly, as well as parts of the equally unmissable Il trovatore and La traviata by Verdi. The Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by Gianluca Marcianò, who is also at home in the world of the theatre. Compulsory for all lovers of Italian opera.

ABOUT THE CONCERT

His aria recital at the beginning of June was sold out months in advance and was a sensational success, with audiences and the press unanimously enthusiastic: Tenor star Jonathan Tetelman "suffers, dreams, triumphs" (Süddeutsche Zeitung) "with a perfectly fitting voice" (Münchner Merkur). He met "highest expectations"—after all, he is "blessed with a rarely effortlessly responsive voice" (Abendzeitung). He is considered one of the most exciting young singers of our time, performing on the stages of prestigious venues with world-renowned orchestras and demonstrating his talent in a "dark-toned tenor timbre" (Süddeutsche Zeitung).
