Through some of opera’s most stirring masterpieces, the evening traces the universal struggle for liberation and dignity. From the spiritual yearning of Bellini’s I Puritani, to the songs of resistance in Verdi’s Nabucco, to the emotional fire of Il Trovatore, plus Beethoven, Bernstein, Copland, Rodgers & Hammerstein, and Handel — these works embody the spirit of risorgimento, Italian for the “rising again” of a people.
